FAQs

How do I prepare my ears for my appointment?
You will need to (ideally) oil your ears twice a day for 1-2 days before the procedure. Please use oil from a pharmacy if possible, Earol is good and easy to use. For the best results place a few drops in your ear canal, then make a plug from cotton wool and vaseline, this will keep the oil in, leave the plug in for 10-20mins or so.

For urgent appointment’s we ask that you oil before you arrive and the evening before if possible.

Patients with a perforated ear drum should NOT oil.

Our ear care nurses will always do an assessment first to determine if your ears have a blockage and if they require microsuction or sometimes irrigation. We will only charge £38 if there is no wax or blockage. If during the assessment our ear care nurse finds wax or a blockage that needs removing the cost increases to £48 for one ear or £68 for two ears.

Home visits have a call out charge of £30 for Bath or £40 for areas around Bath. The procedure cost is added to this. So a home visit for both ears in Bath would cost a total of £98.

Can I book an assessment only?
Yes you can. At the beginning of your appointment our ear care nurses will always do an assessment to determine if your ears have a blockage and if they require microsuction or sometimes irrigation, this includes an assessment of both ears and ear care advice. We will only charge £38 for an assessment. If during the assessment our ear care nurse finds wax or a blockage that needs removing the cost increases to £48 for one ear or £68 for two ears.
Why do I need to oil my ears beforehand?
Oiling your ears before you appointment helps to soften the wax, so it’s easier to remove. This is particularly important for patients with deep impacted wax. We ask patients to (ideally) oil your ears twice a day for 1-2 days before the procedure.
How long does the procedure take?
It depends on how blocked your ears are. We allow 30mins for each appointment this is usually enough time even for the most stubborn wax.
My appointment is for one ear, but what if I need both ears doing?
If you have booked an appointment online with us for one ear, but our ear care nurse makes an assessment that both ears need doing, she will try to do both ears during the appointment, however this can only be attempted if both ears have been sufficiently prepped with oil. In the event of the other ear not being prepped or our ear care using the majority of the appointment time slot on the one ear. Patients will need to book and pay for a subsequent appointment for their other ear.
What if I don't have any wax or a blockage?
At the beginning of your appointment our ear care nurses will always do an assessment to determine if your ears have a blockage and if they require microsuction or sometimes irrigation, this includes an assessment of both ears and ear care advice. We will only charge £38 for an assessment. If during the assessment our ear care nurse finds wax or a blockage that needs removing the cost increases to £48 for one ear or £68 for two ears.
What if you can't remove all the wax?
Sometimes when ears have dense impacted wax it can be very tricky to get all of the wax out in a single clinic appointment. In this case we offer a free follow up appointment, but this is conditional on patients having sufficiently oiled ears as required prior to their first appointment. The majority of times this will be enough time for our ear care nurse to remove all the wax, however very rarely if a third follow up appointment is needed then the patient is required to pay for this.

What is Microsuction?
Microsuction is a safe wax-removal technique using specialised a high magnification binocular operating microscope allowing depth-perception and magnification to look directly into the ear canal. The clinician then uses a very fine sterile suction device at safe low pressure to remove the wax buildup.
What equipment do we use?
Our nurses use specialised high magnification microscopes to look directly into the ear canal, they then use a very fine sterile suction device at safe low pressure to remove the wax buildup.
Why is microsuction better than syringing?
Microsuction is generally considered the safest method of removal. During suctioning the clinician can visualise the ear using a microscope, this allows us to remove wax without disturbing or risking trauma to other areas of the ear.

Irrigation involves putting water into the ear at pressure, as it flows out back into a cup it brings out the loosened wax or debri that was stuck in the canal. In order for this to happen it needs to rebound off your ear drum, this can slightly increase the risk of perforation or infection and is not suitable for every patient.

There are some cases however where a water base method of removal such as irrigation is more appropriate and even safer. Some of those will include if you have a noise sensitivity or have difficulty keeping still during the procedure. Similarly after some types of infection, the ear may need to be washed out gently to remove debris to prevent reoccurrence.

In some cases, the safest way to remove wax is manually with small instruments the clinician is trained to use within the ear canal. Rather than one safe method, we firmly believe wax removal should be based on the patient’s factors, how they present on the day and the clinician’s assessment

At bath ear care we are nurse led and patient focused. This means that prior to treatment our clinicians will take a brief clinical history and discuss any factors that may affect your removal. Patient preferences and past experiences are always taken into account. The ear is a sensitive place and your comfort with the procedure is an important factor to us when removing wax safely and relieving symptoms

How many times a year can I have mircosuction?
If you get regular build ups of ear wax, you can attend a few times a year for removal and routine check up’s.
Do you offer hearing tests?
At the moment we don’t, but we may do in the future.
